Frequently Asked Questions

Will you read my work?

Unfortunately that’s not something I can do for a whole host of reasons, mostly legal liability and lack of time. My friend Dave Goodman has a great page on his website about why authors generally can’t read unsolicited submissions sent to them. What I do recommend is finding a supportive writing community where you can swap critique with like-minded peers. Doing that in my baby-writer days was so helpful, and the success rates of writers who have support systems are VERY high. Ignore my advice if you know that already!

Will you read my query letter?

Yes, but I prefer not to do that by email. If you’re on Facebook, join Sub It Club and post it for general critique. If I have time and it’s a genre I read, I’ll try to comment! Additionally, I have many query writing resources on my site, which you’re free to look at. The reason I do it that way: query critique is best when it comes from lots of different POVs; you will get a better, more rounded perspective if more than just me is commenting.

Can you refer me to your agent?

I can only refer novels I’ve read, from authors I know. A referral isn’t just passing on an email, it’s a complete vote of confidence from me that I believe not only in a specific book’s commercial potential, but also that the personality of a given author is a good fit for my agent.

Also, if you’re a debut, it’s worth noting that referrals are surprisingly unhelpful. At this stage, it doesn’t matter if a dozen people refer you; the agent in question still has to like your material and see a path to publication for it. About 95% of new clients actually come from the slushpile, and referrals comprise less than 5% in most cases.

Will you come speak to my bookclub?

Yes! I love doing this, please drop me an email and I’ll do my best to make time. My only caveat is that I would prefer not to stick around while folks are actually discussing the book, as I think it’s important clubbers be free to express their opinion without me hovering over them! But I’m happy to swing by for a chat or quick interview, and then leave you all to your discussions :)

Can you send out signed bookplates?

Depending on country and quantity, sure! I used to say “email me” for stuff like that, but due to the spam AI situation, you’re best off contacting me through socials. I am easiest to reach on Instagram, Bluesky, and FB, or you can send a letter to my agency, addressed to me.
